- 4. Chairman's annual report.
- Dr Reeve reported that the year had been
highly successful. Following our questionnaire, steps had been taken to
raise the profile of our lectures and activities. All members on the
Dorset Local History database had been circulated with details of events
and the results were encouraging. 34 members attended the AGM, at which
Roger Peers gave a lecture on John Clavel Mansel-Pleydell, the first
president of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Field Club.
On a warm summer afternoon 20 members were entertained with a fine
historical walk around the planned medieval borough of Newland,
Sherborne led by local historian Katherine Barker. In November a total
of 78 came to hear Martin Ayres give a talk about the housing of the
labouring Poor in Dorset. Last month 80 delegates joined us for our
annual Day School on the Origins and Development of settlement in Dorset
and heard papers on the Saxon Origins of Wimborne, Roman Dorchester,
Domesday Purbeck and the Medieval expansion of Bridport and Sherborne.
Unfortunately one of our speakers was unable to attend to an extra
lecture will take place, probably in June. Dr Reeve ended by thanking
the committee for their hard work and the Dorset County Museum for their
hospitality and support.
- 5. Election of officers.
- Dr Reeve was elected as Chairman (proposed Pam
le Bas, seconded George Mortimer). Mrs Ann Smith was elected as
Secretary (proposed Cecil Amor, seconded John Brown). George Mortimer
and Jane Ferentzi-Sheppard were elected to the committee for three years
(proposed John Brown, seconded Cecil Amor). Robin Ansell, Katherine
Barker, John Brown and James Webb have two more years to serve; Pamela
Le Bas, Anne Hosford, Dr Karen Mew and Dr Judith Ford have one more year
to serve.
- 6. A.O.B.
- There being no other business, the meeting closed.
